Democratic vs Republican Platforms on Israel

Reeling from criticism over their adoption of a pro-Hamas problem, the Democratic Party and its media allies have struck back by accusing the Republican Party?s platform of being just as bad on Israel. While it?s true that the Republican Party?s platform could be better on Israel, comparing the two quickly shows which party is pro-Israel? and which isn?t.

And even as the President and the Democratic Party continue to encourage all parties to be resolute in the pursuit of peace, we will insist that any Palestinian partner must recognize Israel?s right to exist, reject violence, and adhere to existing agreements.

As discussed before, there is no mention of Hamas or an explicit condemnation of terrorism against Israel.

the Palestinian people must support leaders who reject terror, embrace the institutions and ethos of democracy, and respect the rule of law? Israel should not be expected to negotiate with entities pledged to her destruction

?radical elements like Hamas and Hezbollah must be isolated because they do not meet the standards of peace and diplomacy of the international community.

As discussed previously, the Democratic platform in 2008 had language about isolating Hamas. That language was removed. The new language refers only to a generic partner strongly implying that the Obama Administration will expect Israel to negotiate with Hamas.

The Republican platform addresses the topic of Palestinian terror and condemns specific terrorist groups. The Democratic platform does not.

We support Israel?s right to exist as a Jewish state with secure, defensible borders; and we envision two democratic states? Israel with Jerusalem as its capital and Palestine? living in peace and security.

As long as its scandal-ridden management continues, as long as some of the world?s worst tyrants hold seats on its Human Rights Council, and as long as Israel is treated as a pariah state, the U.N. cannot expect the full support of the American people.

?

The Democratic Party would very much like to split the difference on this, but the difference is not splitable. The Republican platform could be better, but the Democratic platform has opened the door to negotiations with Hamas and eliminated even the basic reassurances about Jerusalem remaining as the capital of Israel even if the negotiations continue.
