Death of India rape victim stirs anger, promises of action

NEW DELHI/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A woman whose gang rape provoked protests and rare national debate about violence against women in India died from her injuries on Saturday, prompting promises of action from a government that has struggled to respond to public outrage.

The unidentified 23-year-old medical student suffered a brain injury and massive internal damage in the attack on December 16 and died in hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment.

Protesters rallied peacefully in the capital New Delhi and other cities across India to keep the pressure on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government to get tougher on crimes against women. That was in contrast to the pitched battles protesters fought with police last weekend.

The six suspects held in connection with the attack on the student on a New Delhi bus were charged with murder following her death, police said. The maximum penalty for murder is death.

Authorities, worried about the reaction to the news of her death, deployed thousands of policemen, closed 10 metro stations and banned vehicles from some main roads in the heart of New Delhi, where demonstrators have converged since the attack to demand improved women's rights.

Despite efforts to cordon off the city centre, more than 1,000 people gathered at two locations. Some protesters shouted for justice, others for the death penalty for the rapists.

Most sex crimes in India go unreported, many offenders go unpunished, and the wheels of justice turn slowly, according to social activists who say that successive governments have done little to ensure the safety of women.

Political leaders vowed steps to correct "shameful social attitudes" towards women in the world's biggest democracy.

"The need of the hour is a dispassionate debate and inquiry into the critical changes that are required in societal attitudes," the prime minister said in a statement.

"I hope that the entire political class and civil society will set aside narrow sectional interests and agenda to help us all reach the end that we all desire - making India a demonstrably better and safer place for women to live in."

REPATRIATION

The woman, beaten, raped and thrown out of a moving bus, had been flown to Singapore in a critical condition by the Indian government on Thursday.

She and her male friend were returning home from the cinema, media reports say, when six men on the bus beat them with metal rods and repeatedly raped the woman. Media said a rod was used in the rape, causing internal injuries. The friend survived.

"She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome," Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer of the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore said in a statement announcing her death from multiple organ failure.

The Indian government has chartered an aircraft to fly her body back to India, along with family members, T.C.A. Raghavan, the Indian high commissioner to Singapore, told reporters.

The body was taken from the hospital to a Hindu undertaker in Singapore and hours later, lying in a gold and yellow coffin selected by Indian diplomats, the body was driven in a hearse to the airport.

The plane took off from Singapore at 1630 GMT and was expected to reach New Delhi around 3 a.m. local time on Sunday (2130 GMT Saturday), the NDTV channel reported on its website citing the High Commissioner.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in the northern Indian city of Lucknow. In Hyderabad, in southern India, a group of women marched to demand severe punishment for the rapists. Protests were also held in the cities of Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai.

"For some reason, and I don't really know why, she got through to us," well-known columnist Nilanjana Roy wrote in a blog on Saturday.

"Our words shriveled in the face of what she'd been subjected to by the six men travelling on that bus, who spent an hour torturing and raping her, savagely beating up her male friend."

GENDER ISSUES

Sonia Gandhi, the powerful leader of the ruling Congress party, directly addressed the protesters in a rare broadcast on state television, saying that as a mother and a woman she understood their grievances.

"Your voice has been heard," Gandhi said. "It deepens our determination to battle the pervasive and the shameful social attitudes that allow men to rape and molest women with such impunity."

The attack has put gender issues centre stage in Indian politics. Issues such as rape, dowry-related deaths and female infanticide have rarely entered mainstream political discourse.

Analysts say the death of the woman dubbed "Amanat", an Urdu word meaning "treasure," by some Indian media could change that, although it is too early to say whether the protesters calling for government action to better safeguard women can sustain their momentum through to national elections due in 2014.

The outcry over the attack caught the government off-guard and it was slow to react. It took a week for Singh to make a statement on the attack, infuriating many protesters who saw it as a sign of a government insensitive to the plight of women.

The prime minister, an 80-year-old technocrat who speaks in a low monotone, has struggled to channel the popular outrage in his public statements and convince critics that his eight-year-old government will take steps to improve the safety of women.

"The Congress managers were ham-handed in their handling of the situation that arose after the brutal assault on the girl. The crowd management was poor," a lawmaker from Singh's ruling Congress party said on condition of anonymity.

Commentators and sociologists say the rape has tapped into a deep well of frustration many Indians feel over what they see as weak governance and poor leadership on social issues.

A global poll by the Thomson Reuters Foundation in June found that India was the worst place to be a woman because of high rates of infanticide, child marriage and slavery.

New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes among India's major cities, with a rape reported on average every 18 hours, according to police figures. Government data show the number of reported rape cases in the country rose by nearly 17 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Top official: Whole society benefits from the state's care for press ...

Azerbaijan, Baku, Dec. 27 / Trend. Trend E. Mehdiyev /

For many years, Azerbaijani government has been showing care for the press and this benefits the whole society in general, Head of Azerbaijani Presidential Administration's Social and Political Department Ali Hasanov said.

He made the remarks at the award ceremony of the competition announced by Azerbaijani Fund of State Support to Media Development under the President on Thursday.

"The government has been taking care of the press for many years," Hasanov said.

Hasanov said that according to the concept adopted in this area, Azerbaijani Fund of State Support to Media Development under the President each year decides on certain issues related to labor and social problems of journalists.

"As a result of this attitude of President Ilham Aliyev to the press he was elected as friend of journalists. Next year, we will participate in the opening of the building, for the first time in the history of the country, built for journalists. Neediest and most productive journalists will be provided with apartments in that building," Hasanov said.

Significant events are to happen in Azerbaijan in 2013.

"Presidential elections are coming up in Azerbaijan. Work of media will increase during the year of presidential elections. The main issue is to satisfy the information needs of the Azerbaijani state and people by uniting, and to solve the existing problems in this area," he said.

Speaking of journalistic competition, Hasanov said that there are winners, but there are no losers in it, there are journalists who took the first, second, third and subsequent places.

"The first three places are awarded. Although others do not receive awards, they can participate in the competition next year, presenting even better articles. The main issue is that by holding these events, we demonstrate the care of the state and President Ilham Aliyev for the press," he said.

Guns flood into buyback programs across US

Joe Klamar / AFP - Getty Images

LAPD officer checks an assault weapon received during a gun buyback in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings, cities and police departments across the country organized events to buy back guns, hoping, they say, that fewer firearms on the street translates to fewer shooting deaths.

In Los Angeles, a gun buyback scheduled for May was pushed up to Wednesday because, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told Marketplace.org, ?People said, ?I don?t want to wait on the Congress. I?m tired of the endless debates about responsible gun control legislation. I want to do my part.??

That buyback in the Van Nuys district brought in 2,037 guns, including 75 assault-style weapons, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

Gun buybacks are proving so popular that U.S. Rep. Gerald Connolly, D-Va., and Ted Deutch, D-Fla., have asked Congress to set aside $200 million for gun buyback programs, saying that amount could remove ?one million guns from our streets.?

But critics say buybacks are a fruitless exercise ? more political theater than effective policy.?

?It?s like trying to drain the Pacific with a bucket,? Alex Tabarrock of the conservative Independent Institute told USA Today in 2008. There are an estimated 310 million guns in the U.S.?-- about one for every U.S. resident.

PhotoBlog: Buyback in Los Angeles brings in hundreds of guns

A 2004 report released by the National Academies of Sciences called the premise for gun buyback programs ?flawed.?

?The guns typically surrendered in gun buy-backs are those that are least likely to be used in criminal activities,? the report says. ?Old, malfunctioning guns whose resale value is less than the reward offered in buy-back programs or guns owned by individuals who derive little value from the possession of guns (e.g. those who have inherited guns).?

Such criticism hasn't stopped police departments, which have hosted gun buybacks for years, encouraging residents to turn in their firearms ? no questions asked ? for cash or gift cards, usually $50 to $250. Some police departments offer a sliding scale, giving more money for semi-automatic firearms, which were used in the ambush on firefighters in Webster, N.Y., last week, the Newtown shootings two weeks ago, at the Sikh temple attack in Oak Creek, Wis., in August and in the theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., in July.

Among those turning in their guns in events this month were parents and grandparents who told reporters they worried about having weapons around.

A grandmother in Brooklyn attended a gun buyback the day after the Connecticut school shooting on Dec. 14?and told gothamist.com that fatal shooting of 20 children -- most of them 6 years old -- moved her to hand in her gun.

TSA confiscates record number of guns at US airports in 2012

?It should inspire everyone,? she said. ?We?ve got to protect our children. I couldn?t wait for today to come so I could get rid of it. The shooting yesterday was an eye-opener. It was bone-chilling.?

In Camden County, N.J., police heard from residents who wanted to turn in their weapons in light of the Newtown shootings. The buyback there retrieved more than 1,100 weapons, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

That buyback was so successful that officials handed out all of the $110,000 in forfeited money that the Attorney General's Office had provided. They gave $39,000 in IOUs that they will honor with future forfeited money. Nearly all of the guns were operable, according to the Inquirer.

In Ithaca, N.Y., the Police Department announced plans for a gun buyback to ?remove unwanted guns from our community before they fall into the hands of those that may do harm.?

In southern Florida, an Uzi submachine gun ?like the one used by Scarface? was turned in to a buyback sponsored last weekend by the Opa-locka Police Department, the Miami Herald reported.

Two Uzi-style guns turned up at a buyback Friday in San Diego that was sponsored by African-American ministers. That buyback retrieved 360 weapons before 10 a.m., according to The Atlantic.

Bill Stowers, 59, told the Los Angeles Times he attended the San Diego gun buyback because he worried that his 12-gauge shotgun might fall into the wrong hands given the break-ins in his neighborhood.?

"I don't need this shotgun sitting around," Stowers said. He received a $50 gift card.

Reps. Connolly and Deutch, who proposed that $200 million be set aside for gun buybacks, say the gun buybacks would be a start, not a cure-all, to gun violence. In a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, they wrote:

The murder of 20 youngsters and six educators in their classrooms has galvanized the public?s desire for immediate action, and partnering with the States on a nationwide gun buyback program is a modest, common-sense start.

Holiday travelers stranded as weather heads east

The Weather Channel's David Malkoff reports from Fishers, Ind., where snow and wind are expected to increase over the next few hours, with record-breaking snow possible for much of the Midwest.

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

A wicked winter storm was sweeping east across the United States Wednesday, creating a post-holiday travel nightmare with more than a foot of snow in some places and hundreds of planes grounded.

"Blizzard warnings stretch for?730 continuous miles?due to Winter Storm Euclid,"?The Weather Channel?s?Tom Niziol reported.

The white-out came a day after a Christmas storm unleashed heavy snow, deadly winds and even some tornadoes on the nation?s midsection, killing at least three people.

As millions of Americans braced for snow, rain, ice or more twisters, some 1,311 flights had been canceled and 5,613 were delayed, according to the travel website FllightStats.com. The airports most affected included Indianapolis, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O?Hare and Washington Dulles.

The forecast called for heavy snow from northern Ohio into northern Pennsylvania into southern New York, possibly severe thunderstorms in the Southeast Atlantic, and a tornado threat in the eastern Carolinas.

After the storm socked little Albion, Ill., with 18 inches of snow, city worker Renee Galen?s SUV got stuck and she got to her office the only way she could.

"One of the city guys came by with a snowplow and I flagged him down and rode to work with him," Galen told NBC News.

"I had to get to work because today was the last day to file for city elections. Believe it or not, I?ve had three people come in to file."

In Indianapolis, seven inches of snow fell in three hours Wednesday morning, bringing post-Christmas shopping to a halt, the Indianapolis Star reported.?

Stephen Canter, 44, ventured out before 8 a.m., and the roads were thick with snow when he headed back 30 minutes later.

"By the time I got home, the street was covered," he told the newspaper. "I don't remember snow like this since Valentine's Day of 2007."

Indiana State Police received 100 calls of crashes or cars sliding off roads before noon and warned motorists that if they got into trouble it could take a while to get them help, NBC affiliate WTHR.com reported.?

Cars and several 18-wheelers were stuck in the ice along 1-70, and the snow fell faster than crews could clear the roads.

"The biggest problem is the blowing. We got some high winds and the roads are really beginning to drift bad," Ron Sharp with Wayne County Emergency Management told the station.

Parts of New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania are also forecast to get hit with more than a foot of snow, and New England could get up to a foot.

The blizzard warning in Ohio prompted United Airlines to cancel at least 60 percent of their flights at?Cleveland?Hopkins Airport beginning at noon on Wednesday, according to?NBC affiliate WKYC.com. About 1,000 people spent the night on cots at Dallas/Fort Worth after their Tuesday night flights were scrapped.

The weather system, which started over the weekend, wreaked havoc on Christmas. It knocked out power to tens of thousands of people and was blamed for at least five deaths.

In Enola, Ark., two toddlers were killed when a car lost control on an ice-slicked highway and spun into oncoming traffic, state police said.

Wind-toppled trees killed a pickup truck driver near Houston, Texas, and a 53-year-old man in north Louisiana. NBC affiliate KJRH reported?that?a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy highway near Fairview, Okla.

?

Witnesses report significant storm damage in Mobile, Alabama. WPMI's John Dzenitis reports.

Hundreds of flights delayed, canceled as holiday storms travel across country

Christmas Day tornadoes ?- the preliminary count was at least 21, according to the Weather Channel -- battered Southern states.?And Little Rock, Ark., didn?t just have a rare white Christmas ?- it had its snowiest day ever, with nine inches on the ground.

After sweeping through the Midwest with blinding snow, a major winter storm brought a rare white Christmas to parts of the South and set off damaging tornadoes. The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore reports.

?

The storms contributed to a 21-vehicle pile-up Tuesday that shut down a major highway in Oklahoma City, as well as tens of thousands of power outages. Emergency service provider MedStar told?NBCDFW.com?it responded to 71?crashes in the Fort Worth area between 5 p.m. and 9:50 p.m. Tuesday evening.

As it tracked east, authorities were taking the storm seriously.

In Indianapolis, Mayor Greg Ballard ordered "non-essential" workers to stay home and off roads. Cleveland asked businesses to send workers home by 1:30 p.m., NBC affiliate WKYC.com reported.?Homeowners in coastal Long Island, ravaged by Superstorm Sandy in October, were told to take precautions to prevent flooding with seas expected to peak at 15 feet, NBCNewYork.com reported.

By the time it leaves the New England coast Friday, the storm will have left snow from coast to coast ?- and there could be another wallop coming soon.

Weather Channel meteorologist Guy Walton said a weather pattern with the potential to become Winter Storm Freyr is poised to enter the West Coast on Wednesday and move through the Rockies on Thursday. It could then head for the lower Mississippi Valley, then the Southeast and hit the Northeast on Sunday.

Finless Porpoises in Peril

A survey has found that fishing, pollution and other human activities along the Yangtze River in China are driving a freshwater mammal, the Yangtze finless Porpoise, to the brink of extinction

Fishing, pollution and other human activities along the Yangtze River in China are driving yet another species of freshwater cetacean to the brink of extinction. That is the conclusion of a six-week survey of the river?s middle and lower stretches by the Chinese Academy of Sciences? Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) in Wuhan and the conservation group WWF in China.

The final results of the survey will be announced in March. But the preliminary findings are worrying: the survey team spotted fewer than half of the Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis) that were seen during a similar expedition in 2006, which found 1,225 living in the river.

?This is really bad news,? says Wang Ding, an ecologist at the IHB who is the survey's chief scientist. ?The finless porpoises are doing much worse than previously thought along the Yangtze mainstream.?

The Yangtze finless porpoise is one of the world?s few remaining freshwater cetaceans. It is found only in the Yangtze, as well as in two adjoining lakes, called Poyang and Dongting. Scientists hope that the porpoises can avoid the same fate as the Yangtze river dolphin, or baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), which was declared effectively extinct after the 2006 survey.

Endangered ecosystem
The latest survey also found that a population of about 450 porpoises in Poyang Lake has been stable for the past six years. But only 90 of the animals remained in Dongting Lake, a decline of 40% since 2006. This means that there is a total of only around 1,000 finless porpoises in the Yangtze River basin ? making them even rarer than giant pandas in the wild.?

?Losing these big, top carnivores in the Yangtze is a pretty good indication of the terrible state of the river ecosystem,? says David Dudgeon, an ecologist at the University of Hong Kong in China, who was not involved in the survey.

"Intense human impact is to blame," says Lei Gang, director of WWF China's freshwater program. "The conflict between conservation and economic development along the Yangtze is overwhelming."

Overfishing has caused a big decline in the porpoises? food sources, says Wang, and the animals are vulnerable to unregulated fishing methods such as electro-fishing, which involves sending electrical currents into the water to stun fish before they are caught.

Pollution problem
Pollution is another major, long-term threat, says Dudgeon. The Yangtze, regarded by Chinese people as their ?mother river?, supports 40% of the country?s human population, and its riverbanks are lined with large cities, factories and power plants. According to Dudgeon, about 20 billion tons of waste are discharged into the Yangtze every year. ?This doesn?t even include diffuse pollution from agriculture or pollution caused by ships,? he says.

Like other cetacean species, the Yangtze finless porpoise uses sonar for navigation, ranging and foraging. But the high density of shipping along the Yangtze creates high levels of acoustic pollution, which interferes with the animals? sonar. ?This affects their feeding and many are also wounded or die because of ship strikes,? says Lei.

Other human activities such as dam building, land reclamation and sand dredging have contributed to large-scale habitat loss and degradation in the Yangtze River basin in recent decades, says Lei.

The Yangtze finless porpoise is currently listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. ?The new estimate may qualify them as critically endangered,? says Wang. ?If the situation does not improve significantly, they may follow the fate of baiji in 15 years.?

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) ? A Christmas Day twister outbreak left damage across the Deep South while holiday travelers in the nation's much colder midsection battled sometimes treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions.

Conditions were volatile throughout the afternoon and into the night with tornado warnings in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The storms were blamed for two deaths, several injuries, and left homes from Louisiana to Alabama damaged.

In Mobile, Ala., a tornado or high winds damaged homes and knocked down power lines and large tree limbs in an area just west of downtown around nightfall, said Nancy Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Mobile County Commission. WALA-TV's tower camera captured a large funnel cloud headed toward downtown.

"We haven't verified what it was, but we have an area that we heard has damage to homes," she said.

Meanwhile, blizzard conditions were hitting the nation's midsection.

Earlier in the day, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol says a 28-year-old woman was killed in a crash on a snowy U.S. Highway near Fairview.

The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma late Tuesday, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 10 inches of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 30 mph whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity.

Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky with predictions of 4 to 7 inches of snow.

No injuries were confirmed immediately, but fire crews were still making door-to-door checks in the hardest hit areas of Mobile. The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, which was providing storm updates through Twitter, said Murphy High School was damaged and that there was a gas leak at a nearby apartment building.

An apparent tornado caused damage in the west Alabama town of Grove Hill, located about 80 miles north of Mobile.

Mary Cartright said she was working at the Fast Track convenience store in the town on Christmas evening when the wind started howling and the lights flickered, knocking out the store's computerized cash registers.

"We've had some pretty heavy weather," said Cartright in a phone interview. "Our cash registers are down so our doors are closed."

Trees fell on a few houses in central Louisiana's Rapides Parish but there were no injuries reported and crews were cutting trees out of roadways to get to people in their homes, said sheriff's Lt. Tommy Carnline. Near McNeill, Miss., a likely tornado damaged a dozen homes and sent eight people to the hospital, none with life-threatening injuries, said Pearl River County emergency management agency director Danny Manley.

Fog blanketed highways, including arteries in the Atlanta area, which was expected to be dealing with the same storm system on Wednesday. In New Mexico, drivers across the eastern plains had to fight through snow, ice and low visibility.

At least three tornadoes were reported in Texas, though only one building was damaged, according to the National Weather Service. Tornado watches were in effect across southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

More than 400 flights nationwide were canceled by the evening, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. More than half were canceled into and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport that got a few inches of snow.

Christmas lights also were knocked out with more than 100,000 customers without power in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama.

In Louisiana, quarter-sized hail was reported early Tuesday in the western part of the state and a WDSU viewer sent a photo to the TV station of what appeared to be a waterspout around the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in New Orleans. There were no reports of crashes or damage.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the National Weather Service said.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32.

In Mobile, a large section of the roof on the Trinity Episcopal Church is missing and the front wall of the parish wall is gone, said Scott Rye, a senior warden at the church in the Midtown section of the city.

On Christmas Eve, the church with about 500 members, was crowded for services.

"Thank God this didn't happen last night," Rye said.

The church finished a $1 million-plus renovation campaign in June 2011, which required the closure of the historic sanctuary for more than a year.

IFixit loves new tech devices, especially in pieces

SAN LUIS OBISPO ? Jake Devincenzi was thrilled to get his hands on Google's new Nexus 4 smartphone. He admired its sleek black case and large touch screen ? and he couldn't wait to tear it apart.

In a small room cluttered with discarded computer parts, Devincenzi picked up a blue plastic stylus and eased the tool into a seam on the side of the phone as three co-workers watched.

Minutes later, a pop. The tear-down had begun.

"We're in," he said, and grinned.

Each time Devincenzi plucked a part from the Nexus 4, he took a high-resolution photo and posted it online. By the end of the week, more than 60,000 people had scrutinized the tear-down, curious to know what was inside.

Devincenzi, a 20-year-old Cal Poly San Luis Obispo student, works part time for IFixit, a company that has less of a business mission than a manifesto: "Repair is independence. We have the right to remove 'Do Not Remove' stickers."

With the helping hands of technicians such as Devincenzi and repair guides written by volunteer tech experts, IFixit is tapping into growing frustration with cellphones, tablets and computers that, once broken, are almost impossible to fix. The company says it wants to teach people how to repair electronic devices once again ? and will sell them the tools to do it.

The company's logo is a clenched fist thrusting a wrench in the air.

"It's not like it was 10 years ago, when you could open things up and kind of half-recognize what was in there," said Sean Campbell, a technology industry analyst with the Oregon research firm Cascade Insights. "I think most people have given up."

To IFixit staff, every high-resolution photograph of naked phone bits splayed across a table is a small act of rebellion against big technology companies like Apple, Google and Samsung. Tear-downs, they say, are a rallying cry for the common man to grab a screwdriver and take back the right to do it yourself.

"We're not necessarily actively anti-Apple or anti 'the Man,'" said Scott Dingle, 25, a customer service representative. "It's more like, we train other people to do it themselves."

What is now a staff of 35 began as two people. In 2003, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshmen Kyle Wiens and Luke Soules started selling laptop parts out of a dorm room. When they couldn't find manufacturer-issued repair guides, they wrote their own. The first manual they posted online got 10,000 page views in the first weekend.

They moved their business to a three-car garage, then a house, then a loft-like two-story office in downtown San Luis Obispo. Most IFixit employees are younger than 35. Many grew up taking apart toasters.

Last year, IFixit earned $5.9 million in revenue by selling parts, kits and tools. Some of their more popular items include a "spudger" to adjust small wires, a five-sided screwdriver that fits Apple's proprietary screws, and a magnetic mat to keep track of tiny pieces that come loose.

Some of its tools resemble teeth-cleaning instruments. That's because the first tools IFixit used had been discarded by a dentist.

After Christmas, the company usually sees a spike in sales of parts, Wiens said. He attributes that to people who decide to repair their old gadgets if they don't get a new one as a gift.

Soules, 28, is the business mind. He runs the in-house shipping center and handles the money. The revenue he oversees covers operating costs, including salaries, tear-downs and expensive trips to buy gadgets the moment they come out.

Wiens, 28, is the chief executive and the ideas guy. In college, he dreamed of building a robot that would pick strawberries. Today he dreams of a world where computers don't wind up in landfills, but are fixed instead.

On the Friday before Thanksgiving, workers gathered at IFixit headquarters. Bikes, homemade robots and vintage pinball machines crowded the entryway. Upstairs, an employee's dog sniffed past an 8-foot-tall potato launcher and into the office break room, where Wiens' wife had prepared dinner for more than 50 people.

Spouses and significant others settled on couches to eat. The pingpong table became a dining room table. A baby cried.

Bene Raia From 'Market Warriors' On Vintage Kids Toys And Collectibles

This holiday season, Market Warriors antiques pro (and mom of four kids under 10!) Benedicta ?Bene? Raia weighs in on buying vintage gifts for her children, the contemporary toys that they collect, and what she wishes that she had held onto from her own childhood.

Raia?s favorite collectibles, and area of expertise, include antique dolls and toys. According to Raia, ?Anything that relates to how children lived and played 100 years ago is very interesting for me. I tend to compare those children with mine and I find the similarities amusing and the differences thought-provoking.? Raia adds, ?It?s fun for me to see that my kids want to do what mommy does. I love that they are thinking like true collectors.?

We interviewed Raia to learn more:

The Huffington Post: If you were buying your kids only vintage gifts what would you purchase?

Bene Raia: I would buy the girls Renwal dollhouse furniture. It?s vintage and made of hard plastic. It can be played with and still retain its value. The scale is just right for some of the small scale ?play? dolls that are available now, such as Polly Pockets.

For the boys, I would buy mechanical tin toy robots and cars. I would focus on the Japanese made ones that are meant to be played with. The wind-up toys are also colorful and can be easily displayed.

HP: What are some things that parents are buying today that you could see becoming the collectible of tomorrow?

BR: Toys made today are very durable and mass produced words. You might think would negatively impact their collectability, but that is not the case. Some contemporary toys are very collectible. I think that toys based on popular television shows and movies will be collectible in the future. I remember when Star Wars came out. We loved the series and now Star Wars toys are very collectible. I see the Harry Potter series going in the same direction. My son is just finishing the books and we just watched the movies. I can see him collecting toys based on the characters and holding onto them in the years to come.

HP: Knowing that parents are balancing sentimentality with overcrowded playrooms, what would you advise parents to hold on to and what would you encourage them to give away?

BR: My advice is to let the children lead the way. I watch my kids play and if they love a certain doll or toy, we focus on those items for their collection. The girls are now into American Girl dolls. The dolls are big (18?) and they take up a lot of room. To keep things fair, each girl can have dolls that fill a certain area (in our house it?s the top of each girl?s dresser). If the area is filled then there?s no more room for a big doll but there?s room for the doll?s purse or pet etc.

HP: What are some of the things that your kids collect?

BR: My girls collect dolls ? American Girl dolls, Polly pockets, Barbie and stuffed dogs. My boys collect toy cars, Thomas trains and baseball cards.

HP: What do you wish you had held on to from your own childhood?

BR: I have held on to my favorite teddy bear but I wish I had my doll. She was a black 36" Patti Playpal type doll. In addition to the sentimental attachment, if I were to buy this same doll today she would retail for close to $300.

HP: What have been some of your favorite Market Warriors finds that fit into this category?

BR: My favorite flea market find would have to be the dollhouse that came with rooms of furniture that I purchased in for our first auction with eBay (airing on PBS, Monday, February 25th at 9pm). The dollhouse was Marx and the plastic furniture was Renwal. I?ve bought and sold similar dollhouses and each time I?m amazed at the quality and detail depicted in each room. I?ve also purchased miniature furniture (small scale chest of drawers) and again the workmanship is evident. I really like that a lot of thought went into how children would play and interact with these toys.

You can get to know Bene on Monday, January 7th at 9pm/8C on PBS when she has her Market Warriors debut. For a sneak preview of what she will be bringing to Market Warriors and her thoughts on being a working mom, watch the video below and see more of what kids have collected over the years on the Market Warriors Pinterest gallery.

Tricks For Great Business Writing | Successful Speaking Secrets

Most of the Australian employees don?t have great writing skills although great business writing is an extremely important aspect of all sorts of businesses in Australia. The main reason behind this is that the majority of people who work in the field where business writing is critical do not have sufficient writing training. Most of the universities do teach writing skills to their students, but they don?t teach how to use these skills in practical life. And those pursuing a business degree do not often put much focus on strengthening writing skills on their own.

However, not having great business writing skills gives you a substantial handicap in the business world. This handicap will become an even greater problem when you progress further in your career. Ultimately, it may keep you from being promoted to the next level. Here we?ll offer some fast and simple tips to improve your professional writing.

1. Stay Relevant
Writing in business has one golden rule, which is appropriately described by the saying ?less is more?. Avoid any sort of fillers in your writing, plainly saying what you want to convey. Writing specialists agree that this makes for better writing, but in an area like business where time is so critical, it may be even more essential. A busy executive does not want to have to go through paragraphs of pointless information to find out the point of your article. Be clear and eliminate any unnecessary words.

2. Check Your Work
You?ve heard this advice hundreds if not thousands of times by now, but it still holds as true as it did when you were a young child. Proofreading is extremely important as a typographical or spelling error can turn a reader?s viewpoint against you. Some readers are even straight up offended when they are given something with little mistakes in it, as it means you didn?t think they were important enough for you to proofread your writing prior to giving it to them. One more great technique to proofread the your writing is to read the writing loudly so you can hear what you wrote. It also helps to set your writing aside for some time, then return to it later. This gets your mind fresh and ready to notice errors it may have overlooked earlier.

3. Make Sure You?ve Got The Names Right
If you misspell somebody?s name, it is telling them that they weren?t important enough to you to find out the spelling and get it right. This can seem an insult and the reader might ignore the entire proposal. Not only should you have names spelled properly, but you should also be very aware of titles, genders, and everything else that is personally connected with an individual. Mixing these things up may cause your suggestions, however great they are, to be disregarded.

A lot of practice is required to improve business writing. If you stick to the aforementioned tips then it would certainly help you in enhancing your writing and give you a leg-up in the business world.
