Cyprus votes for president as clock ticks on bailout deal

NICOSIA (Reuters) - Cypriots started voting in a runoff on Sunday to elect a president who must clinch a bailout deal for the island nation to avoid a financial meltdown that would revive the euro zone crisis.

Conservative leader Nicos Anastasiades, who favors hammering out a quick deal with foreign lenders, is favored to win against Communist-backed rival Stavros Malas, who is more wary of the austerity terms accompanying any rescue.

Financial markets are hoping for an Anastasiades victory that speeds up a joint rescue by the European Union and International Monetary Fund before the island runs out of cash and derails fragile confidence returning to the euro zone.

The 66-year-old lawyer took more than 45 percent of the vote in last Sunday's first round, easily beating Malas who took 27 percent.

The winner takes the reins of a nation ravaged by its worst economic crisis in four decades, with unemployment at a record high of 15 percent. Pay cuts and tax hikes in preparation for a bailout have further soured the normally sunny national mood.

Newspaper headlines reflected the grim outlook, warning of an uphill climb for the new president. One described it as walking towards "Calvary", the location where, according to Christian scripture, Jesus Christ was crucified.

"He will be plunged straight into the deep end, and failure is not an option," the Simerini daily wrote. Phileleftheros, another daily, said: "Its a long road ahead, and insight and vision is needed."

Like candidates, newspapers also called on people to vote. Fewer voters were expected to show up at the polls than on February 17 after the third-placed candidate refused to back either contender in the runoff, boosting Anastasiades's chances.

"Whatever happens in this vote, the day after is going to be very difficult for Cyprus," said Demetris Charalambous, a 56-year-old convenience store owner. "People are really depressed. Business is bad, we are at risk of shutting down."

Prospects for a quick bailout that revives the sinking Cypriot economy - which the EU says will shrink a worse than expected 3.5 percent this year - have been equally grim.

Talks to rescue Nicosia have dragged on eight months since it first sought help, after a Greek sovereign debt restructuring saddled its banks with losses. It is expected to need up to 17 billion euros in aid - worth the size of its entire economy.

Virtually all rescue options - from a bailout loan to a debt writedown or slapping losses on bank depositors - are proving unfeasible because they push Cypriot debt up to unmanageable levels or risk hurting investor sentiment elsewhere in the bloc.

German misgivings about the nation's commitment to fighting money laundering and strong financial ties with Russia have further complicated the negotiations.

END UNCERTAINTY

Longstanding anger over the island's 40-year-old division into the Greek-speaking south and Turkish north has been relegated to a distant second as an election issue this year, with both candidates vying to portray himself as the right man to lead the country out of its financial quagmire.

"We must end the uncertainty and give Cyprus back its lost international credibility and its prestige in Europe," Anastasiades said as he ended his campaign.

A heavy smoker known for his no-nonsense style, Anastasiades is widely respected but suffered political humiliation nine years ago when he supported a United Nations blueprint to reunify the island that was later rejected by the public.

He has suggested the island may even need a bridge loan to tide it over until a rescue is nailed down.

His younger rival Malas is handicapped by the support of the incumbent Communists who are perceived as having mismanaged the economic crisis and a munitions blast in 2011.

Still, he is expected to get a boost from his pledges to drive a hard bargain with lenders and anti-austerity rhetoric that resonates with many Cypriots struggling to make ends meet.

"I want to see someone worthy win, who will cut out cronyism and be decisive about the problems we have," said George Nearchou, 58, an unemployed electrician.

"I am however very worried about austerity, people are very angry. I see a popular uprising."

Police want charges for Eisenhower basketball coach Steve Johnson

SAN BERNARDINO - Police have filed a case with the District Attorney's Office seeking criminal charges against an Eisenhower High School basketball coach.

Steve Johnson, 47, of Yucaipa was shot several times in his upper torso after stopping at Seccombe Lake Park on Fifth Street in San Bernardino shortly before 8 p.m. Jan. 21.

Johnson, a popular boys basketball coach at the Rialto school, said he stopped to use the bathroom on his way to get gasoline, San Bernardino police said.

According to police, Johnson has given conflicting reports of what transpired that night.

In a previous statement, San Bernardino Police Chief Robert Handy said there is reason to believe that Johnson withheld some information in

his statement of what happened that night and that his failure to be completely honest hindered the investigation.

Police want Johnson to be charged with obstruction of justice.

"This case is pending review," said district attorney's spokesman Christopher Lee. "Until a decision has been made, we cannot comment any further."

Johnson initially told police he stopped at the park to urinate and that when he was done three black men attempted to rob him.

Handy has said police had no reason to doubt that Johnson was the victim of a robbery followed by a shooting at the park.

The gunman demanded Johnson's wallet. When he said he didn't have it, the gunman opened fire, police said.

Since the shooting, Johnson has changed his story multiple times, prompting the filing of the case with prosecutors, police said.

A witness reportedly came forward but Handy said in a phone interview Friday that he would not confirm or comment on the matter.

Johnson was at home recovering but under heavy medication, according to his brother, Phil Johnson.

Officials with the Rialto Unified School District said they continue to support Johnson as he recovers.

"We wish Coach Johnson, who indeed was the victim of a violent crime, a speedy recovery, and the district will continue to work with law enforcement during their investigation," district spokeswoman Syeda Jafri has said.

The ELLE Bulgaria 'Rhytms of Africa' editorial finds no better inspiration for women's spring and summer wardrobes. Since the heat is undeniable on that particular continent, it is only natural that outfits there would be suitable for summers in other parts of the world. Not to mention that African women's use of vibrant fabrics and exotic patterns would liven up any ensemble, be it for a day at the office or a Saturday stroll shopping.

Shot by photographer Zlatimir Arakliev, the ELLE Bulgaria 'Rhytms of Africa' editorial is set to appear in the March 2013 issue of the magazine. It stars models Gloria P. and Dzhu Pi. Listen and Learn with Lots2Spot, a New iPad Game for Toddlers

February 22, 2013

Seattle, Washington - Hiyu2, a game app development company based in Seattle, introduces Lots2Spot 1.0.1, a fun new "listen and find" iPad app designed specifically for toddlers to play alone or with their parents. A huge variety (500+) of brilliantly illustrated objects keeps children engaged while they listen and learn vocabulary, colors, and numbers up to five. Who wouldn't want to "find the purple paper clip" or the "upside-down walrus"!?

The inspirations for Lots2Spot were the developer's friends and families, and what Hiyu2 co-founder Stephanie Krimmel calls, "a general lack of iPad games for 2-year-olds that are both truly appropriate for toddlers and enjoyable for parents to play with them. Too many are difficult to use (some require reading), force the kid to touch something they shouldn't (like a knife), or are just downright annoying."

Krimmel's obsession with finding the perfect apps for toddlers led to a Web site, the Picky Kid App Guide, where she rates and reviews iPad apps for kids, and ultimately, to the creation of Lots2Spot.

Hiyu2 co-founder and designer Jennifer Bartlett says, "We created Lots2Spot with a bit of a hidden agenda. We really wanted to draw the cutest creatures, most intriguing objects, and beautiful backgrounds, so that we love playing and watching the screen randomly fill up too. It's been really fun developing personalities for the animals... The bear is just a little bit needy!"

Lots2Spot includes three levels of play, and is fun for ages eighteen months to kindergarten. The first level builds vocabulary for very young children with brightly colored flashcards. In Levels 2 and 3, the screen fills with lots of objects (28 or 40, respectively) and players "clean up" by listening to the prompts and finding the right items. As they progress, they'll learn colors, adjectives, categorization and counting. The game can made more (or less) challenging in the app's settings. Voiceover prompts can be turned off for readers who want to help a younger child play.

Device Requirements:
* Requires iPad or iPad mini with iOS 6.0 or later
* 75.4 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Lots2Spot 1.0.1 is $3.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games/Educational category.

Let's Respect Morocco's linguistic identity | Morocco World News

By Mohamed Amine Qasserras

Morocco World News

Rabat, February 21, 2013

A failed plastic surgery to brighten the image of the French language in Morocco under the name of linguistic diversity and offering Darija as a way out of linguistic schizophrenia in Morocco.

The article titled??Let?s?celebrate Linguistic Diversity??by Christine Houben presents a great misunderstanding of the Moroccan cultural and historical context. The author begins her article by claiming, or reminding, Moroccans in a stern writing style that Morocco underwent a protectorate and that it was not a colony.

The author presented the French presence in Morocco from 1912 until 1956 as a protectorate. She goes on to attempt to embellish the situation?calling French the language of people who protected and gave a helping hand to Moroccans in their time of need.

Culturally speaking, ?protectorate? is much more pejorative and offensive than ?colony,? if we consider Tailor?s definition of culture as a civilization. Referring to Morocco as a French protectorate and not a colony leaves information open to interpretations.

Embracing this term by a western journalist or a travel writer brings back the slogan of the civilization mission and orientalist discourse; the inability of Moroccans to protect themselves and run?their affairs by themselves. The notion of being a protectorate identified Moroccans as immature, and engulfed in anarchy?while it depicted the French colonizers as heroes.

In writing, the notion of colony is usually associated with the material crime, while a protectorate is related to ethnocentrism discourse and post-colonial dialogue. Frankly speaking, I did not understand what the writer meant by saying that Morocco was a protectorate and not a colony to stress linguistic diversity.

Reading the writer?s words in a different way causes the reader to conclude that imperialism is implicitly introduced and swallowed as a means of cultural diversity. The author also drew an unfair comparison between the use of French in major cities like Casablanca and the speaking of Spanish in northern Morocco.

The spread?of the French language in major cities like Casablanca or Rabat is not the case of Spanish in the North. Though some Spanish is spoken in the North, French is still the language used in business and administrations all over the kingdom, including in the northern areas.

Regardless of the brutal Spanish colonization, speaking Spanish or borrowing some of its words or even adapting some Spanish cultural values is seen as a cultural diffusion, since Morocco borders Spain. Conversely, French in Morocco is no more than a colonial legacy imposed on Moroccans. The use of French is widespread in Morocco. It is the official language of?the country though it is not drafted in the Moroccan constitution. Moroccan administrations communicate in French, a language that 80 percent of Moroccans do not master.

I support linguistic?or broadly?cultural diversity, but Morocco should not be seen any time as a fertile land perfect for any linguistic cultivation. A sense of identity should be presented, indeed.

The author tried to point out that Darija should be the official language to be taught in Moroccan schools as a way out of linguistic schizophrenia. She gives some concrete examples of some countries who adapted foreign languages, even the language of the colonizer, as was the case in India.

Still, it is easy to recognize that this article was written?not to define linguistic diversity in Morocco per se, or suggesting Darija as a way out of linguist-schizophrenia in our society, but to act as plastic surgery for the French language which has lost many of its fans in Morocco and abroad.

Morocco is one of the rare countries in the world which has celebrated its cultural diversity for centuries. The recent Moroccan constitution recognizes all local languages and all identities within the country much more than some ?democratic? western countries, including France.

France, as one of the ?democratic? nations in the world, has rejected?any attempt to constitutionalize local languages within the French Republic as an attack on French national identity. Article two of the French constitution obviously states ?The language of the republic is French.??This means that French national identity is only expressed through French.

There are many local languages spoken in France but only French is seen to represent the linguistic identity of French people. Historically, students belonging to minorities in French schools were punished for speaking local languages such Breton, Alsatian, Occitan, etc. There are more than 5 million Arabs immigrants living in France but their language or identity are not recognized by the French Government. France is one of the few countries who has refused to sign the European Union?s?Chart giving legal rights to minority-language speakers.

I have many French friends and it is not uncommon to see a French person having a sense of linguistic patriotism defending French even in a ?French protectorate.?

This article would be better addressed to the Democratic Republic of France to celebrate linguistic diversity and tolerate multiculturalism. This is an inappropriate label for a country like Morocco which has embraced tolerance and multiculturalism for centuries.

The views expressed in this article are the author?s own and do not necessarily reflect Morocco World News? editorial policy

To go or not to go? 10 controversial destinations in 2013

Intrepid travelers like to push their limits?they'll test their stamina, language skills and culinary daring in far-flung destinations around the globe. But we don't like to see anyone risk their personal safety on an ill-researched sojourn. So, each year Budget Travel gives you the lowdown on some spots that should, at least for the near term, stay on your "don't bother" list, some that are a definite "maybe" and a few that you may be surprised to hear get a definite "yes."

Slideshow: 10 controversial destinations

Jersey Shore
Sure, you know that Superstorm Sandy hit the New Jersey coastline last fall, tearing up boardwalks, hotels, vacation homes and beaches. What you may not know, however, is that "the shore" will be open for business this summer. In fact, Lori Pepenella, Long Beach Island's destination marketing coordinator, recently told the Newark Star-Ledger, "As businesses are investing and rebuilding, we're getting the message out that we're open right now." While rebuilding post-Sandy is a challenge -- especially for areas such as Seaside Heights, whose boardwalk sustained serious damage -- New Jersey's $38 billion hospitality industry depends on a thriving shore and everyone is sprinting toward a successful Memorial Day weekend. For those of you who thought this might be the summer to skip New Jersey's miles of family-friendly beaches, legendary boardwalks and amusement parks, and notorious party scene, local boosters are working hard to change your mind: Atlantic City is telling anyone who will listen that contrary to rumor, its boardwalk was not destroyed by the hurricane, and Long Beach Island has produced a video to promote its open-for-business status at visitlbiregion.com. There's no quick fix, and the reopening of seaside businesses is only part of the to-do list (for the shore to truly roar back, neighboring vacation homes and hotels will have to be in good repair as well), but if optimism and hard work can carry the day, you should probably start making your Memorial Day weekend reservations... now!
To go or not to go: Go.

Cuba
For those of us who grew up during the Cold War, the question may still seem fanciful: Want to visit Cuba? But whereas the Caribbean island was once off-limits except to the most adventurous of American travelers (who would typically enter Mexico or Canada before flying to Cuba), it is now possible for U.S. citizens to see this amazing country by booking with a licensed tour operator that performs "people-to-people" trips. A package will include interaction with Cubans and classes in Cuban culture and history and should also include a visa, airfare, hotel, meals and an experienced tour guide. They don't come cheap?weeklong trips are often more than $2,000 per person?but are the best way to ensure that you comply with U.S. law and that you see the island in the safest way. While accurate crime statistics are not available from Cuba yet, the U.S. Department of State cautions visitors to be alert for pickpocketing, purse-snatching and burglaries, but traveling with a licensed people-to-people tour guide will help minimize any danger.
To go or not to go: Go, if you can afford a U.S.-approved people-to-people tour.

Spain
It's a sign of the economic times that a nation of Spain's stature could even make our list of questionable destinations. The final quarter of 2012 saw Spain's economic output drop 1.8 percent compared with last year, its worst performance since the global economic meltdown of 2009. As the country embraced an austerity program to bring down its budget deficit, demonstrators took to the streets, often meeting an aggressive response from the police. In Barcelona, some demonstrators even demanded independence. It's important to keep all this in perspective, though: The U.S. Department of State has not issued a warning against visiting Spain, and the country still poses only the crime threats one might expect in any developed region: You need to be as aware of the potential for pickpocketing, mugging and break-ins as you would when visiting, say, Italy or France. In addition, some of the advice the State Department has issued for visiting places like Greece and Israel, where the potential for spontaneous public demonstrations is high, should be heeded when visiting Spain: Stay away from demonstrations (they are not spectator sports, and passersby have been swept up in police actions in Barcelona), and check with your hotel's concierge for updates on the potential for unrest in your destination.
To go or not to go: Go.

Israel
With some of the world's holiest sites, sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians alike, Israel is a one-of-a-kind destination. From the ancient streets of Jerusalem to the nightlife of Tel Aviv, this is a place where the past rubs elbows with the present like no other. Unfortunately, all that elbow-rubbing comes with a downside, and Israel has been the scene of religious tension, terrorist attacks and flat-out war over the course of its 60+ years. The U.S. Department of State strongly warns Americans not to visit the Gaza Strip and most areas of the West Bank (other than Jericho and Bethlehem), due to ongoing tensions and risks that can range from rock-throwing to rocket fire. On the other hand, major cities such as Haifa and Tel Aviv are as safe as any in the world, and Jerusalem, as long as you observe some common-sense rules, is an unforgettable experience that shouldn't be missed. While in Jerusalem, avoid street protests and approach religious sites with caution on holy days, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays because of potential congestion and security restrictions. As with any troubled region, you will feel most supported and informed if you travel with an experienced tour operator and stay in touch with the staff at your hotel about the potential for political and religious demonstrations.
To go or not to go: Go, but avoid the West Bank and Gaza.

Mexico
Yes, millions of U.S. citizens visit Mexico safely each year, but as the U.S. Department of State points out, it's best to stick to major cities such as Mexico City and popular resort areas such as Los Cabos and destinations in Quintana Roo such as Cancun, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya and Tulum, where the crime rate can actually be lower than in some U.S. cities. But more adventurous travelers should spend some time at state.gov reviewing the warnings about visiting border regions and some Mexican states (including Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Sonora, Chihuahua and others) that have seen heavy drug-trafficking activity, including daytime gun battles, carjackings and kidnappings. Regardless of where you travel in Mexico, be prepared for the same risks you might encounter when visiting any American city.
To go or not to go: Go, but only to major cities and resort towns.

Japan
2012 saw an increase of 30 percent in tourism to Japan over the preceding year, according to the Japan National Tourist Organization. It's no wonder people stayed away in 2011: In March of that year, the nation was rocked by the largest earthquake in its history, a magnitude 9 quake that destroyed buildings and triggered a tsunami on the island's northeast coast, causing the deaths of thousands and a meltdown at a major nuclear-power plant, including a release of dangerous radiation. But millions have returned to Japan in the past year, buoyed by the nation's swift recovery efforts. Today, major destinations such as Tokyo are completely safe and 2013 may even set a record for visitors.
To go or not to go: Go, as long as you avoid the area around the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear-power plant.

Egypt
The political unrest that rocked Egypt two years ago, including public uprisings against then-president Hosni Mubarak, certainly put Egypt front-and-center on the world stage, and inspired some to delay travel plans to the north African nation. But sites such as the pyramids and Great Sphinx at Luxor, museums and historical sites in Cairo and the beauty of the Lower Nile (now enjoying a resurgence in river cruises) still inspire waves of visitors, and the U.S. Department of State does not explicitly warn Americans away from Egypt. It does suggest that you stay away from public demonstrations, which can be unpredictable and sometimes turn violent. Visiting Egypt with an experienced tour guide, or staying in a major hotel whose concierge regularly monitors the potential for unrest, is your best bet.
To go or not to go: Go, but, for now, stick with well-trod tourist sites such as Cairo and Luxor.

Greece
There's no sugar-coating it: The economic downturn and austerity measures have inspired strikes and public demonstrations in Greece, especially in major squares in the capital city of Athens. While they are usually peaceful and pose no threat to the democratic government, some demonstrations have turned violent, including fire-bombings and vandalism. It's best to avoid ogling demonstrations because of their potential to turn ugly. Americans visiting Athens should be aware that anti-migrant sentiment can make some visitors targets of aggressive behavior?and even police sweeps. The U.S. Department of State especially cautions Americans of African, Asian, Hispanic and Middle Eastern descent to be on guard because they may be mistaken for migrants. All Americans should carry a copy of a passport or photo ID at all times. That said, tourism to Greece is still a booming business?major hotels in Athens, resorts on the islands and other destinations with knowledgeable staff and on-site security are not only safe but among the most rewarding vacation spots you could choose.
To go or not to go: Go to the islands, stick to the beaten path in Athens.

Haiti
When we say a travel destination "has it all," we usually don't mean crime, cholera, damaged infrastructure and limited police and medical resources. Unfortunately, that is the situation in Haiti three years after a magnitude-7 earthquake demolished much of the already-impoverished nation (which shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic), killing more than 300,000 people. While Haiti has spent billions just to maintain basic services, risks are high and resources for visitors are slim?traveling there as anything but a volunteer will only add to the strain. The U.S. Department of State warns that Americans have been victims of murder and kidnapping, including attacks on arriving visitors that have occurred right outside the Port-au-Prince airport.
To go or not to go: Don't go.

Syria
Sure, Syria boasts some of the most dramatic ruins and landmarks in the Middle East, but this one's a no-brainer: "No part of Syria should be considered immune from violence," reports the U.S. Department of State, warning Americans not to visit the troubled nation (and those Americans who remain in Syria are urged to leave immediately). Anti-government activity and the Syrian government's use of deadly force?including aerial bombing of civilian areas, armed clashes between government and opposition groups, and the arrest, detention and torture of individuals?have made Syria one of the most dangerous places on earth. And once inside, it can be difficult to get a flight out or to cross the border into neighboring countries, which include Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Israel.
To go or not to go: Don't go.

Man Uses His Story To Inspire Healthier Lifestyle | WREG.com ...

Posted on: 3:58 pm, February 12, 2013, by Dennis Turner, updated on: 05:27pm, February 12, 2013

(Southaven, MS) Richard Neal Came to DeSoto County to help make it the healthiest place in Mississippi.

Neal is part of a program sponsored by the Community Health Council to help get people moving.

Paige McKinny is doing it with her friends, ?Sports and stuff, that always helps, going after school with your friends and being in clubs like that. We all get together and work out and stuff.?

At a ?Fat Tuesday? event, students got to learn about healthy options for exercise, and even what makes up healthy food.

It?s something that helped Richard Neal lose 240 pounds in just 18 months, ?Good, whole, natural foods that the good earth gives us every single day can satisfy you the same way that bag of chips can and takes just as long to just opening the bag as it does to be slicing an apple.?

Healthy food isn?t always easy to find in rows and rows of chips.

That?s why the Mississippi House approved a bill to set up a loan program to help retailers put more fresh food on their shelves.

It would apply in Counties like Tunica and Marshall with few fresh food options.

Students at the Tuesday event will take the ideas they?ve learned here and bring them back to their schools to motivate people the way Neal did them.

?It?s identifying a lot of new ideas for our school to get us involved in fitness and everything. I like it,? said McKinney, who says what she learned here, will making fitness and healthy food more fun for more people.

Neal will also appear at Hernando?s Gale Center Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8pm, to share his story, and even work out with residents in the city?s ?fit club.?

Philippine town mourns largest captive crocodile

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? A remote southern Philippine town has gone into mourning over the death of the world's largest saltwater crocodile in captivity, even though it was blamed for the deaths of several villagers.

Bunawan town plans to preserve the remains of the 1-ton crocodile, named Lolong, in a museum to keep tourists coming and stop the community from slipping back into obscurity, the mayor said Monday.

Lolong was declared dead Sunday after being found floating on its back with a bloated stomach in a pond in an ecotourism park which had begun to draw tourists, revenue and development because of the immense reptile, Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said.

"The whole town, in fact the whole province, is mourning," Elorde said. "My phones kept ringing because people wanted to say how affected they are."

Wildlife experts will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death, he said.

Guinness World Records had proclaimed it the largest saltwater crocodile in captivity last year, measuring the giant at 6.17 meters (20 feet 3 inches). The reptile took the top spot from an Australian crocodile that measured more than 5 meters (17 feet) and weighed nearly a ton.

Estimated at more than 50 years old, the crocodile was named after a government environmental officer who died from a heart attack after traveling to Bunawan in Agusan del Sur province to help capture the beast.

Even though Lolong was blamed for the deaths of several villagers over the years, Bunawan villagers grew to love the giant reptile because it came to symbolize the rich biodiversity of the marsh where it was captured. The vast complex of swamp forests, shallow lakes, lily-covered ponds and wetlands is home to many animals, including threatened species such as the Philippine hawk eagle.

Various religious groups offered prayers Monday and spiritual leaders also planned to perform a tribal funeral rite, which involves butchering chickens and pigs to thank forest spirits for the fame and other blessings the crocodile has brought, Elordie said.

The rite is to be held at the ecotourism park, where the reptile was a star attraction, drawing foreign tourists, scientists and wildlife journalists to Bunawan, a town of 37,000 people about 515 miles (830 kilometers) southeast of Manila.

The crocodile's capture in September 2011 sparked celebrations in the town. It was caught with steel cable traps during a hunt prompted by the death of a child in 2009 and the later disappearance of a fisherman. Water buffalos have also been attacked by crocodiles in the area.

About 100 people led by Elorde pulled the crocodile from a creek using ropes and then hoisted it by crane onto a truck.

Philippine officials had planned to construct a road to the park to accommodate the growing number of tourists, Elorde said.

He said Lolong will be preserved so tourists and villagers can continue to marvel at it.

"I'd like them to see the crocodile that broke a world record and put our town on the map," Elorde said.

    Love yourself this Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day... to you! We're in the season of love, and it's important to remember that while we're loving and taking care of others, we need to factor ourselves in, too. Ready to get loving on you a little? Here's how.

    Pump yourself up

When was the last time you worked up a good sweat? Not only are workouts good for your body, but they also can be energizing too. Wake your body up with an intense session and you'll see long-lasting benefits.

"Every Monday, I take the kids to a sitter and meet with a trainer first thing in the morning. It's only an hour workout session, but it allows me the chance to take care of myself and I also feel great. It also affords me the opportunity to take a nice, long, hot shower without being interrupted," says Janae Melvin, a mom of two.

Even if a trainer isn't in your budget, you can get your sweat on with exercise DVDs, online workout videos or just taking a walk or a jog outside.

    Green smoothieEat well

You know that saying that you are what you eat? OK, you might not turn into a jumbo cookie after indulging a little too much from the office treat tray, but if you aren't eating well, your body will show the effects. So make an effort to start your day right with a balanced breakfast that energizes you for the day.

"I make sure I have a healthy breakfast and allot time each morning to juice kale/apple/carrot/lemon/parsley/cilantro and after my walk, I have chia seeds with warmed coconut milk along with organic hot cocoa - the best comforting, warming, healthy food," says certified nutritionist Nancy Guberti, MS.

    Essential nutrients

Part of loving yourself is feeding yourself well. These nutrients will help you have optimal health and feel good too.

Vitamin C: We all know that germs are the evil enemy in wintertime, but vitamin C can help you fend off colds (though the Mayo Clinic has said that the benefit is small). But it's also good for your mood according to research. Now please pass the OJ.

Vitamin D: Keep your brain sharp! According to research by a team at Angers University Hospital in France, a diet with a higher vitamin D intake has been linked to a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.

Calcium: Protect those bones! Calcium-rich foods are essential to bone health. And yes, calcium from foods is better than supplements, according to a preliminary study by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine. According to the study, women who get their calcium from dietary sources have better bone density and overall bone health.

    Get some shut-eye

Sleep is an important factor in health, too, so make sure you are getting enough rest every evening. You'll wake up rejuvenated and ready to tackle every day. As a bonus, getting more sleep can also help with weight loss ? score!

Boy Scouts delay decision on admitting gays

IRVING, Texas (AP) ? The Boy Scouts of America put off a decision Wednesday on whether to lift its ban on gay members and leaders, saying the question will be taken up at the organization's national meeting in May.

"After careful consideration and extensive dialogue within the Scouting family, along with comments from those outside the organization, the volunteer officers of the Boy Scouts of America's National Executive Board concluded that due to the complexity of this issue, the organization needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy," Deron Smith, the BSA director of public relations, said in a statement.

Smith said the organization's national executive board will prepare a resolution for the 1,400 voting members of the national council to consider. The annual meeting will take place in May, 2013, in Grapevine, Texas.

Walking to his car after the delay was announced, board member Jack Furst had very little to say.

"It's all good," Furst told The Associated Press before driving away.

The BSA announced last week it was considering allowing troops to decide whether to allow gay membership. That news has placed a spotlight on executive board meetings that began Monday in Irving, Texas, where scouting headquarters is located.

Smith said last week that the board could take a vote Wednesday or decide to discuss the policy, but that the organization would issue a statement either way. Otherwise, the board has remained silent, with reporters barred from the hotel where its meetings are taking place.

At nearby BSA headquarters, a handful of Scouts and leaders delivered petitions Monday in support of letting gay members join. The conservative group Texas Values, meanwhile, had organized a Wednesday morning prayer vigil urging the Scouts to keep their policy the same.

President Barack Obama, an opponent of the policy, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, an Eagle Scout who supports it, both have weighed in.

"My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does in every institution and walk of life," said Obama, who as U.S. president is the honorary president of BSA, in a Sunday interview with CBS.

Perry, the author of the book "On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For," said in a speech Saturday that "to have popular culture impact 100 years of their standards is inappropriate."

The board faces several choices, none of which is likely to quell controversy. Standing pat would go against the public wishes of two high-profile board members ? Ernst & Young CEO James Turley and AT&T Inc. CEO Randall Stephenson ? who run companies with nondiscrimination policies and have said they would work from within to change the Scouts' policy.

Conservatives have warned of mass defections if Scouting allows gay membership to be determined by troops. Local and regional leaders, as well as the leadership of churches that sponsor troops, would be forced to consider their own policies. And policy opponents who delivered four boxes of signatures to BSA headquarters Monday said they wouldn't be satisfied by only a partial acceptance of gay scouts and leaders.

"We don't want to see Scouting gerrymandered into blue and red districts," said Brad Hankins, campaign director of Scouts for Equality.

Survey points to eurozone economic recovery

LONDON (AP) ? Further evidence has emerged that the economy of the 17 European Union countries that use the euro has started 2013 better than many people had expected.

Markit, a financial information group, says Tuesday that its monthly purchasing managers' index for the eurozone's services sector ? a closely-watched gauge of activity ? rose to a ten-month high of 48.6 in January from 47.2 in December.

Though the index remains below the 50 mark that would indicate expansion, the survey does echo findings elsewhere that the eurozone economy may be over the worst. Markit's equivalent manufacturing survey last Friday was similarly encouraging.

Though figures next week are expected to show the eurozone remained in recession in the final quarter of 2013, there are hopes a recovery may take root by summer.

Encounter Books ? Computer Forensics - Finding Out What The Bad ...

Computer forensics is like the CSI study plans on the tv. Using systems and higher level practices, a computer forensic scientist will construct a possible crime using the information this one computer systems. This information can sometimes include hidden directories, files, mail trails and other relevant indications.

Computer Forensics is the scientific study of computers or computer related data with regards to a study by a enforcement agency for used in a court of law. While this technology could be as old as computers themselves, the developments in technology are continually revising this technology.

even though by whom is still difficult, while all computer languages are made with ones and zeros, it?s much easier to monitor what was done when. Forensic science has done well to keep up with the task of tracking and tracing what?s done and development of a timeline in an try to construct a possible crime. While it is achievable to remove and clean data from a tough drive, most people only genuinely believe that a delete key really removed the data. In most cases, the delete key only removed the file area from an file and the actual data is still safely on the system. It?s around the data recovery skills of the forensic computer personnel to restore and capture that data without modification.

Computer forensics may be used to track e-mails, instant messaging and nearly any kind of computer related communications. This can be necessary, especially in the world where data and computers travel round the world in seconds. Box sniffers could literally be placed inside a data flow and give information on what?s working through the community in real time. This is really incredible considering the millions upon millions of data packets going through anyone the main system.

Computer forensic science is a lifetime career an interesting market in the law enforcement field that is seldom considered. Because it is relatively new, the area is considered by many to be wide open for anyone with the project to understand the skills. Unlike several computer associated jobs, a computer forensic specialist will not be outsourced to a nation on the other side of the planet. The privacy of the info is just too painful and sensitive to enable it to travel throughout the world just to save lots of only a little cash. visit link

Danica Patrick, Shut Up and Drive

If you?re going to watch one football game a year, it?s probably going to be the Super Bowl. And if you watch one car race, it?s going to be the Indy 500. The Super Bowl is better on TV than in person: You can?t see the field well from the stands, and you miss all the commercials. The Indy 500 is better in person. It?s loud?so loud that vibrations from the speeding cars shake you in the stands. It?s constantly thrilling: Even under a yellow flag (which means a hazard on the track), competitors are still driving and strategizing rather than standing around scratching themselves. And its opening ceremony is more stirring than Alicia Keys on piano, as grown men drinking Coors Lights before noon sniffle after Jim Nabors belts out ?Back Home Again in Indiana.? (Congrats to Jim and new lawfully wedded husband, Stan.) The race has more history than the Super Bowl does (103 years vs. 46); a ?greater concentration of all-star families (the Bettenhausens, Unsers, Andrettis, Mears, etc.); and its characters are every bit as colorful as football?s: I?ll take A.J. Foyt, the crabbiest person in pro sports, drunk Al Unser Jr., and wall-climber Helio Castroneves over Ray Lewis any day.

But the very best thing about auto racing is that it?s the only major sport in which women compete directly against men. Danica Patrick is the most visible right now, but dozens of women have raced at the highest levels, including some in the 1940s for NASCAR. (No disrespect to marathons, but they have a top women?s time and a top men?s time. Mixed doubles is nice, and Billie Jean King kicked Bobby Riggs? ass. Basketball player Nancy Lieberman was tough and funny. And, sure, a few women have competed against men in golf and horse racing. But so far no other major sporting event has women and men routinely competing as equals.)

Janet Guthrie was the first woman to compete in the Indy 500 in 1977. It was a big damn deal. Auto racing was a ridiculously manly sport, and Indianapolis was a very gender-normative kind of city. Racing requires all kinds of skills that people (unfortunately still) think of as masculine: speed, agility, aggression, spatial reasoning, fast reaction times. You have to have endurance?500 miles is the distance from Indianapolis to Toronto?and ?you have to understand engines and other supposedly macho shit.?

And don?t forget courage. Auto racing is the most dangerous sport. If something goes wrong in football, a player gets a concussion. If something goes wrong in racing, a driver gets decapitated.

Guthrie was the best role model a kid (me) could ask for. In addition to having courage, speed, etc., she was smart, cool, and determined. She was a physics major, aeronautics engineer, pilot, and flight instructor. She applied to be an astronaut. (To NASA?s everlasting shame, it clung to its sexism longer than auto racing did.) Guthrie had mechanical trouble her rookie year at Indy and dropped out before the finish, but the next year she came in ninth, well ahead of Mario Andretti and Johnny Rutherford.

Since Guthrie retired from racing in 1980, 10 other women have competed in the Indy 500. In both 2010 and 2011, four women were among the 33 qualifiers to start the race. Lyn St. James founded a program to train girls to race. Sarah Fisher runs her own racing team.

Danica Patrick is by far the most famous of these women race car drivers. She was the first to lead the Indy 500, in 2005, her rookie year. She was out front for 19 laps, and they were the most thrilling laps in the past few decades of racing. Everybody in the stands was jumping up and down. (I wasn?t there that year, dammit, but my dad and brother were.) People were screaming. People were crying. She finished fourth that year and third the next, and she won an Indy car race in Japan in 2008. She became the most popular driver on the circuit. (The guy who came in first in 2005 knew he couldn?t compete with her for attention. He wore a T-shirt that read, ?I Actually Won the Indy 500.?) After years of losing audience and drivers, Indy car racing was suddenly exciting again. So what did Patrick do with this newfound and well-deserved renown?

After Janet Guthrie became famous, she starred in an ad for Havoline Oil. After Danica Patrick became famous, she starred in a series of stupid, sexist ads for a Web-hosting company. The fastest woman in the history of Indy car racing?again, an absurdly dangerous sport requiring rapid reflexes and superior strategizing?became a (shudder) ?Go Daddy Girl."

Last night?s Super Bowl ad was a spectacularly offensive example of the genre. It dominated the highly competitive most-offensive-Super-Bowl-commercial contest. It features a model, representing beauty, making out with a guy who is supposed to look freakish in TV world and so represents brains. In the real world, he?s not the least bit hideous or even odd. On any given physical dimension (height, body mass index, hours per week spent on personal grooming), many more audience members would fall on his end of the spectrum than hers. Their kiss is noisy, prolonged, and lippy. Patrick narrates the ad and explains that the company has a ?sexy side? and a ?smart side? and that ?together, they?re perfect.?

Offensive commercials are everywhere, and there?s only so much outrage to go around. But people are right to be pissed at Danica Patrick. She squandered the good will of a multitude of fans who wanted to see a woman win at what used to be a man?s game. Guthrie and the other woman drivers pushed one of the most sexist subcultures to respect women or get the hell out of the way while they pass you on the backstretch, and Patrick undermines it all. She?s become a harmless, hair-flipping mascot for another subculture, technology services, that still suffers from rampant sexism.

Patrick recently left Indy car racing to compete in NASCAR. Good luck and good riddance. In the meantime, tune in to the Indy 500 on the Sunday before Memorial Day to cheer for Simona De Silvestro, Ana Beatriz, Pippa Mann, Katherine Legge, or any other woman who is smart, fast, brave, and self-respecting.
