What is a Copywriter? Inside Jobs | FreshGigs.ca

Ever since I can remember, I loved writing. Even some of my elementary school report cards noted how ?Jennifer prefers to express herself through written versus verbal communication.? (I used to take that as a compliment, when I?m quite sure they were expressing concern about me.)

Since then, I?ve written copy for print and TV ads, billboards, websites, brochures, and (obviously) blogs. But I?m not sure I?ve ever identified myself as a copywriter. That?s why, when FreshGigs.ca asked me to write an ?expose? on the job of a copywriter, I felt compelled to reach out to my pals who actually donned the title.

I asked them all the same questions, and they shared their candid (and sometimes smarmy) answers with me. Here?s the cast of copywriters:

  • Kenny Kamerman (KK)
Freelance Copywriter, here, there, everywhere in Toronto City
  • Mary-Jo Dionne (MJ)
Self-employed Writer, Editor, Strategist, Tofu-eating animal-rescuer, a cozy cabin in the woods at the base of North Vancouver?s Mount Seymour
  • Jan Evanski? (JE)
    Creative Director, Corus Radio Vancouver
  • Geoffrey Vreeken (GV)
    Copywriter, DDB, Vancouver
  • Manu Chopra (MC)
Former Senior Writer for Dare Digital, Vancouver

JW: Alright, let?s get this started. First question, what do you tell people you do?

(KK) >> I?m an ideas guy. I write ads.

(MJ) >> My career is three-pronged. I write ad campaigns, write and edit magazine editorial, and do whatever I can to promote animal issues on the side.?(Go check out http://fleasplease.com/)

?(JE) >> I?m a creative writer who manages a team of creative writers.

(GV) >> I?m a writer. In advertising. Like, I write ads. Oh you hate TV ads? Well, I write websites and radio ads and billboards and stuff, too. What? No, I really like it. Ha?yeah?(ugh) it?s not really like Madmen.

(MC) >> I write ads.

Don?t be afraid to write the way you speak.?Copywriting is not prose.?It is a form of conversation designed to convince the listener to take some kind of action.

JW: Do your parents understand what you do?

(GV) >> Vaguely.

(KK) >> After 13 years they still think I write jingles.

(MJ) >> My mom has an entire room where she?s built a sizeable shrine of all my work over the last 15 years. I?m not sure it?s healthy actually. I may need to talk to her about scaling that back a bit.

JW: What would you say is the single most important trait to have as a copywriter and why?

?(MJ) >> The ability to adopt the voice of a brand. In any given day, you will need to speak like a veggie burger, a city?s tourism board, a grocery store, or a dog needing to be adopted. Don?t pigeonhole yourself as ?the beer guy? or the ?long-copy kid?.

(JE) >> Strong communication skills. You need to fully understand your client?s needs and expectations before creating a compelling message to the masses. You also need to work well with your internal clients ? fellow writers, sales people, producers, voice talent etc.

(MC) >> Curiosity. No information is useless, because to write about shit, you need to know even more shit.

JW: Did you go to school to become a copywriter??If yes, was it imperative?

(KK) >> Yes, Humber has an excellent copywriting program. Great for getting your big break to work for free. Eventually if you work for free enough, someone will hire (and pay) you.

(MJ) >> I sure did. For me, it changed everything. I took advantage of every opportunity the program gave me (Humber College; Post-grad certificate in media copywriting). It pushed me to get a strong portfolio together (which is everything). And overall, it gave me a timeline. It was like, okay, school is done, now let?s get this party started. And it did. Right away.

(JE) >> Yes. I studied Marketing and Sales wanting to break into the advertising industry and landed a job in radio where I was given the opportunity to grow my writing and management skills.

(GV) >> Nope. My first agency was too cheap to hire a writer. They thought I fit the bill as the intern, and I kind of fumbled forward from there. Also, if you always end up being the drunkest guy at industry minglers, people will just assume you?re a writer.

(MC) >> Also no. I joined my first agency as a Servicing guy because they weren?t hiring junior writers. I took what I could and wormed, er, worked my way into the Copy department.

JW: Did you have a different job before becoming a copywriter? What was it, and how did it benefit you in your current role?

(GV) >> I was a bartender. Connect the dots.

(KK) >> I?ve had many jobs growing up from dishwasher, grocery clerk, and bricklayer. Everything you do in life counts to things you can write about.

(MC) >> Sales. I couldn?t sell anything. Which helped in a weird sort of way because it taught me early on that selling stuff is tough.

JW: What?s your favorite part of being a copywriter?

(KK) >> Flexibility. Freedom. It?s always new. You?re always using your brain. It keeps it interesting.

(MJ) >> I love working on multiple clients at the same time. It keeps my life very fresh. I also love that, as someone who always knew she was a ?writer?, I get paid to use a natural skillset. And I think above all, cheesy as it may sound; I love the people this career attracts. The friendships that come out of agencies are pretty great.

(JE) >> No two days are alike.?Each day brings a new challenge.

(GV) >> That rare moment when you overhear a stranger chatting (positively) about your work.

(MC) >> The joy of getting a good idea ? and the even greater joy of seeing that good idea shape itself into an ad that sees the light of day.

The fact that absolutely EVERYONE who can spell their name, fancies themselves to be a writer. Well, if that were true, our jobs wouldn?t exist, would they?

JW: What do you like the least about your job?

(KK) >> The modern day slavery of some shops. Nobody should have to work past 8:00 PM on any given day. Give people a life. Let them go home and come back the next day with a full tank.

(MJ) >> Poor planning that leads to last-minute briefing and rushed creative makes me CRAZY! Or, worse than that, poor planning that leads to NO brief and rushed creative makes me positively certifiable.

(JE) >> Poor communication ?leads to misunderstandings, unsatisfied clients and errors.

(GV) >> Any sentence beginning with, ?I?m no writer, but ??

(MC) >> Agreed. The fact that absolutely EVERYONE who can spell their name, fancies themselves to be a writer. Well, if that were true, our jobs wouldn?t exist, would they?

JW: If you could give one piece of advice to anyone contemplating a career as a copywriter, what would it be?

(MJ) >> I once had a Creative Director tell me to develop thick skin, that this is a cutthroat field. My experience has been the opposite. People don?t want to make you look bad, it?s a team-industry. So learn from everyone (even the weenies, and there will be weenies), keep your tool kit robust, and get your ego out of the way.

(JE) >> Don?t be afraid to write the way you speak.?Copywriting is not prose.?It is a form of conversation designed to convince the listener to take some kind of action.

(GV) >> Relax. Write anything to start. Write a lot. Also get me a scotch.

(MC) >> Take your work seriously, there?s a lot of money riding on the stuff you write. But never take yourself too seriously, even if you win a couple of awards. You write ads, you don?t walk on water.

JW: Where do you see yourself taking your career in the next five years?

(KK) >> Same thing, different agencies.

(MJ) >> I have zero idea. And it?s not because I?m directionless, it?s because I tend to say ?yes!? to most opportunities. I love ad copy, I love magazine editorial, I love comedy writing, I do a lot of on-air stuff too to promote animal issues. All told, I?m a communications junkie. And that can lead to a whole lot of different amazing places.

(JE) >> Doing what I do right now?but even better.

JW: If you weren?t a copywriter, you would be a?

(KK) >> West coast hippie.

?(MJ) >> Talk show host, with my blind-deaf-15-year-old-dog Cowboy sitting on my lap.

(JE) >> Lawyer. I like to persuade with words.

(GV) >> Owner of a shitty bar

(MC) >> Screenwriter.

JW: What, in your opinion would be the low, middle, and high income one could earn as a copywriter?

(MJ) >> When I started in 1998, the starting salary was $26,000. As an intermediate it was around $55,000. By the time I was a senior writer, my colleagues were in the $100,000+ range (if they were Associate Creative Directors or VPs, etc), and of course, once you are a Creative Director, it?s lots more. And as a freelance writer today, I?ve seen rates as low as $90/hour and as high as $150/hour, depending on the client, the project, the budget, etc.

(JE) >> 35 ? 50k in a major market with opportunity for freelance income.

(GV) >> Low: $30,000, medium: $60,000 and high: $120,000.

JW: Anything else you care to share for those kicking the tires of a copywriting career?

(KK) >> Go for a test drive. You might just like it.

JW: Content creator. Freelancer. Agency. Client-side. As you can see, the experiences, insights, and suggestions shared today are just as unique as each writer. The job is what you make it ? and there are so many different directions you can go. It?s just a matter of taking the first step.

With a greater range of top international tattoo artists attending and a very exciting arts and concert event schedule, next year`s Cape Tattoo Expo promises to be the best one yet. The inaugural event was attended by more than 75 artists, amongst them some of the brightest stars in international skin ink. For the 5 500 members of the public who attended the first event it was a clear sign that tattoos and tattoo culture had outgrown the stigma of being a ?fringe? or ?backstreet? art form and found its place in mainstream society. Over the following four years, the event attracted scores of more top international artists to the Cape shores, to the point where artists from over thirty countries have attended.

In 2013, Southern Ink Xposure will again bring the best in global tattoo culture and lifestyle. Attendees can look forward to thrilling in the artworks of big-name international convention ?regulars? such as Bob Tyrell (US.), Laura Juan (Spain), Randy Englehard (Germany), Robert Hernandez (Sp/Pol), Mark Bester (U.K.), as well as the very best that South Africa has to offer.

A day pass will cost R100 (which, for the first time, includes admission to expo concerts), and an all-access weekend pass will sell for R250. Tickets will be available through the Cape Tattoo Expo Website and select retail outlets nationwide from November 26.

R&B singer Chris Brown has taken down his Twitter account after a vulgar online exchange with comedian Jenny Johnson.

Johnson says she's now receiving death threats on Twitter from Brown's supporters.

The fight started when 23-year-old Brown posted a picture of himself, saying he looked old. Johnson replied: "I know! Being a worthless piece of (expletive) can really age a person."

Brown fired back a series of crude sexual jokes. Johnson posted a link to a news story about Brown's 2009 assault on singer Rihanna.

Before deleting his account, Brown wrote: "Just ask Rihanna if she mad??????" The on-again-off-again couple have been seen together recently.

A representative for Brown's record label didn't immediately respond Monday to an email seeking comment.

Brown had 11.6 million followers on Twitter.

Leonid meteor shower: When and where to watch

Leonid meteor shower: The meteor shower peak will come tonight (3 a.m. E.T.? Saturday). The Leonid meteor shower is a product of the Earth passing through the tail of the Tempel-Tuttle comet.

This weekend brings us the return of the famous Leonid meteor shower, a meteor display that has brought great anticipation and excitement to night sky watchers around the world.

This will be a favorable year to look for the Leonid meteor shower because the moon will be only crescent and will have set in the west long before the constellation Leo begins to rise into the night sky. The Leonids appear to radiate out of Leo (hence their name), and with the moon out of the sky completely, viewing conditions could be perfect for stargazers with clear weather and dark skies.

The Leonid meteors are debris shed into space by the comet Tempel-Tuttle, which swings through the inner solar system at intervals of 33 years. With each visit the comet leaves behind a trail of dust in its wake. Much of the comet?s old dusty trails litter the mid-November part of Earth?s orbit and the Earth glides through this debris zone every year.?

RECOMMENDED: Are you scientifically literate? Take the quiz

Occasionally, Earth passes directly through an unusually concentrated dust trail, or filament, which can spark a meteor storm resulting in thousands of meteors per hour. That?s what happened in 1999, 2001 and 2002.? Since the Tempel-Tuttle comet passed the sun in 1998, it was in those years immediately following its passage that the Leonids put on their best show.?

But now, the comet and its dense trails of dust have all receded far outside Earth's orbit and back into the outer regions of the solar system. So odds are that there is little, if any chance of any unusual meteor activity. [Photographer Spots Early Leonid Meteors (Video)]

Peak times to see the Leonids

In the 2012 Observer?s Handbook of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, meteor experts Margaret Campbell-Brown and Peter Brown, indicate that this year?s peak activity should occur on Saturday morning, Nov. 17, at about 3 a.m. ET (0800 GMT). This is the moment when the Earth will be passing closest to the orbit of the long-departed comet, and when our planet seemingly is most likely to encounter some residual comet material. This time is highly favorable for North Americans, especially those in the eastern United States and eastern Canada. [Top 10 Leonid Meteor Shower Facts]

But while Leonid rates are unpredictable, it is unlikely that more than 10 to 20 meteors per hour may be seen this year.

Other meteor researchers, however, such as Jeremie Vaubaillon of France, and ?Mikhail Maslovof Russia have examined Leonid prospects for this year and also suggest watching for some meteor activity three days later, on Tuesday morning, Nov. 20.?

View Vaubaillon?s depiction of Earth?s track through the meteor stream. View Maslov?s website on the 2012 Leonids here.

For example: Sometime around 1 a.m. EST (0600 GMT), the Earth may interact with material that was shed by comet Tempel-Tuttle back in the year 1400. But at best, only about 15 to20 Leonids per hour may be seen.?

McIlroy wins Dubai World Championship by 2 strokes

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Rory McIlroy made five straight birdies down the stretch to overtake Justin Rose and win the Dubai World Championship on Sunday, ending a historic year in which the 23-year-old Northern Irishman won the PGA Championship and the European and PGA tour money titles.

The top-ranked McIlroy recovered from early putting woes to finish at 6-under 66 for a total 23-under 265 at the season-ending tournament. Rose, who was tied for seventh after three rounds, surged down the stretch into contention after shooting a course-record 62 that included an eagle and eight birdies.

"I just wanted to finish the season the way I thought I deserved to finish the season," McIlroy said after holing a birdie on 18 and raising his arms in the air in celebration. "You know, I played so well throughout the year and I didn't want to just let it tail off sort of timidly. I wanted to come here and finish in style."

Second-ranked Luke Donald (71) was tied for third with Charl Schwartzel (68) of South Africa. Louis Oosthuizen (69) was another shot back in fifth.

The day was supposed to be a duel between McIlroy and Donald, who were tied for the lead after the third round. The Englishman grabbed an early two-shot lead when McIlroy bogeyed the first and Donald birdied the second.

But then Donald three-putted the third to end a streak of 102 holes on the Earth Course without a bogey to give McIlroy a chance. He then had another bogey on No. 12 to fall three back and never challenged after that, missing the green on the 17th to end his chances.

In the meantime, Rose was climbing up the leaderboard.

The Englishman pulled within one of McIlroy with a birdie and then moved ahead with an eagle on No. 14 after his approach shot rolled to within 10 feet. He sank it for his first lead of the tournament and doubled his advantage when McIlroy three-putted on the 13th.

Rose had another birdie before his 60-foot eagle putt came within inches of the cup on No. 18, and he settled for birdie. Then, he had to wait.

"I thought it was going to be good, to be honest," Rose said. "I caught a glimpse of the board walking to the 18th tee. I saw Rory had gone birdie, birdie, and he's putting the squeeze on. But I knew that is what Rory does."

At No. 17, McIlroy hit what was probably the shot of his tournament, landing a 5-iron within a few feet of the pin.

"You could easily be a lot right into the bunker and leave yourself a tricky up-and-down," he said. "I committed to it and hit a great shot and followed it with a great putt for birdie to give myself that cushion going into the last."

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

SEO, or ?search engine optimization?, means setting up your website so that it is as high as possible in the search engine rankings. There are many paid services just for increasing SEO. You may have been told by people that effective SEO is complicated and should be left to the professionals. Pay no attention to that.

One of the first questions to ask is how many years of experience they have in SEO. You will want to find out what risks are involved in order to make the best decisions for your site.

Configure your server such that it differentiates capital and lowercase letters in URLs. Not checking this can end up in less traffic to your site.

Focus on mastering one SEO strategy at a time. There are not enough minutes in a day to get a hold of every technique. You need to focus your understanding on just a few areas and master them fully.

Many believe that keywords in their comment tags will create a more visible site. You should focus on the things you post on your site.

If you are looking to increase your site?s visibility, you need to make sure that you sign up for free local listing through Google and Yahoo. These services get your site noticed, which means more people will visit your site. Do not turn down free publicity.

Do not create pages full of links. Instead, incorporate the links into your page content, so there is a blending of both links and pertinent material for your readers. Link pages are boring to your readers and are not ranked highly by the search engines. You will appear to know what you are doing if all of your information is relevant.

When you optimize a web page using keywords, you should focus on a single phrase that will attract traffic. Stuffing a page with more than one keyword tends to lead to confusion. The better your content, the more interested your readers will be. Search engine optimization is important but a establishing a core group of readers will benefit your business in great ways.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. It will be easier to draw new readers into your site. Place a keyword in the title, in the summary, and include it in the body about four to five times.

If you upgrade your website often, you will get more attention from search engine spiders. The better the content you provide, the more likely it is to be shared on other websites, providing you backlinks and increased traffic. After an article is shared, it starts to bring in higher levels of traffic.

If you are managing a business website, encourage the CEO or the owner of the business to become involved online. People like hearing from the big guy himself.

Social media sites can serve as great marketing tools to promote your business. YouTube is great for videos, while Facebook and Twitter allow direct interaction.

If you utilize audio or video as part of your website?s content mix, consider including transcripts as part of the post. These transcripts will help search engines better place your website in relevant searches.

Though SEO does have layers of complexity that are best reserved for professionals, there is no reason to believe that beginners cannot also use this tool to their advantage. Instead of wasting time and money hiring someone else, learn a few simple tips to get your website to the top of the search engines? listings. It may be even easier than you imagined!

Do the odds favor CM Punk at Survivor Series?

The rule of thumb regarding predictions for Triple Threat Matches with championship gold on the line is that the odds always favor the challengers. With two competitors simultaneously facing one titleholder, there are more ways for a contender to capitalize than there are for the reigning champion to come away with a victory.

Yet if recent history is any guide, WWE Champion CM Punk may not hesitate to test those odds.

That?s because The Straight Edge Superstar, who now must defend the WWE Title in a Triple Threat Match at Survivor Series 2012 against John Cena and Ryback (MATCH PREVIEW), can call upon his successful experiences in three-sided bouts throughout the past year. Since claiming the championship at last year?s edition of Survivor Series, CM Punk has stepped into the ring for a Triple Threat Match at three different pay-per-views ? WWE: Tables, Ladders & Chairs 2011, No Way Out 2012 and The 25th Anniversary of SummerSlam ? and ultimately left all three victorious.

Does that triumphant trend boost the WWE Champion?s chances of winning at Survivor Series as well? While the probable outcomes of a Triple Threat Match continue to put the challengers at an advantage, CM Punk?s track record certainly implies that he can handle himself when facing two Superstars at the same time. (PLAYLIST: THRILLING TRIPLE THREAT MATCHES)

At WWE: TLC 2011, the two-time WWE Champion escaped being handcuffed to a ring post and managed to put both Alberto Del Rio and The Miz away in his first pay-per-view title defense. (PHOTOS) He later directed the numbers in his favor at No Way Out 2012 by neutralizing one opponent, Daniel Bryan, with a chin-crunching Go to Sleep and later sealing the win by outlasting Kane. (PHOTOS)

The most valuable evidence of Punk?s resiliency resides in his most recent Triple Threat Match at SummerSlam, however. Moments after John Cena knocked out Big Show with a monumental Attitude Adjustment, Punk pushed Cena out of the ring and claimed the easy pinfall for himself. In mere moments, the Chicago-born competitor went from being the odd man out in the match to the one being declared the winner before a raucous STAPLES Center crowd. (WATCH)

One of Punk?s adversaries in that bout, John Cena, will hope for a different outcome at the upcoming pay-per-view in Indianapolis. Of course, the Cenation leader has not minced words in the past when describing the unpredictability of the three-sided clash?s outcome and the frustration it can create for the competitors.

?I hate any match that isn?t a traditional tag team match or a traditional singles match because anything can happen,? Cena said in a 2011 interview with WWE.com. ?It?s truly one of those deals where it?s all about being in the right place at the right time.? (MORE)

Will Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis prove to be the right place for Cena to reclaim the WWE Championship? Is the main event at Survivor Series the right time for Ryback?s rise to the top of WWE? Or can CM Punk come away with his record-setting WWE Title reign intact?

If neither Cena nor Ryback learn from CM Punk?s recent history with the Triple Threat Match, then the challengers may be doomed to see The Straight Edge Superstar repeat his results in the championship clash this Sunday.

United, Dynamo ready

Both teams are coming off massive achievement, as fifth-seeded Houston upset top-seeded Sporting Kansas City in the Eastern Conference semifinals while United gutted out that memorable 1-0 win at New York to secure the other conference semifinal.

Houston is not a place where D.C. United has done well, and two matches this year year were dropped by a combined 5-0.

Then again, Ben Olsen?s club has that little feel of ?destiny? around them, and they sure haven?t done much losing lately.

The clubs meet Sunday downtown in Houston to kick off the home-and-away, total? goals series.

Eastern Conference finals: first of two legs

(Official league preview is here)

Sunday?s Kickoff: 4 p.m. ET, BBVA Compass Stadium, NBC Sports Network

On D.C. United

  • Talk about getting things right at the exact, right time: United is 6-0-3 since early September. They?ve forgotten what it feels like to lose!
  • This will be United?s third trip into BBVA Compass Stadium ? and the downtown ground of abundant orange paint hasn?t been kind to Olsen?s boys. They were Houston?s first victims in the brand new ground back in May. And a meeting in South Texas in July went wrong in all kinds of ways for D.C., who finished on the wrong end of a 4-0 whuppin.
  • Overall, United is 0-8-1 in Houston. Hard to feel good about something like that.
  • United will be without Andy Najar, who received an additional two-game suspension following his unwise actions in the opening leg of his team?s series win over New York. That means Robbie Russell at right back again. He?s probably a better defender, but Russell doesn?t pose anything close to the threat Najar does going forward.

(MORE: Thinking our way around Najar?s suspension)

  • Last time these teams met in Houston, Bill Hamid charged out wildly to take down Mac Kandji, leaving his team a man down and facing a penalty kick. He won?t be around to do so this time; against New York on Thursday, Hamid charged out wildly to take down Kenny Cooper, leaving his team a man down and facing a penalty kick.
  • Here?s a recap of the 4-0 loss.
  • Backup goalkeeper Joe Willis, based on his solid work earlier this year in Hamid?s absence, is not a huge dropoff in quality.
  • If Chris Korb is healthy enough, he will start Sunday at left back, where he did so well as United opened the playoffs. If not, it?s probably Lewis Neal?s job again.
  • Every day that goes by, we inch a little closer to a possible Dwayne De Rosario sighting in the playoffs.
  • United has one day rest fewer than the home team; that?s courtesy of the second big storm to batter the East Coast over two weeks, this one a big snow dumper that forced a 24-hour postponement of the teams? match, which was scheduled for Wednesday in New Jersey.

On Houston

  • What to say at this point about Houston, a team that simply knows how to grind out playoff results? The Orange went to Chicago and found a way to get by the Fire. They hustled and bustled their way to two goals and a sizeable mental edge in a mess of a match against Kansas City down in Houston, then held on for dear, sweet life in the return leg at Livestrong Sporting Park.
  • Houston still has not lost a competitive match inside BBVA Compass Stadium.
  • Center back Jermaine Taylor is back at training but remains questionable. Andrew Hainault, who played well in Wednesday?s series second leg in Kansas City will fill in again if Taylor, a Jamaican international, cannot make it.
  • Starting forward Calen Carr, who left Wednesday?s match with a hamstring injury, looks in serious doubt.
  • One man well rested for the Dynamo: veteran striker Brian Ching, who played just nine minutes over two legs against Sporting Kansas City. Given the injury to Carr, could we see a start from the veteran, former U.S. international? Either way, this will surely be Ching?s last match in Houston, as he seems set to retire at year?s end. (Houston is the one playoff team remaining that has no chance of? hosting MLS Cup 2012.)
  • Dominic Kinnear and his Dynamo are 180 minutes from appearing their second consecutive MLS Cup final. (They fell to L.A. last year at the Home Depot Center.)
  • Houston has allowed 12 goals in 18 regular season and playoff games at BBVA. That?s just ridiculous.
  • The Dynamo has arrived into a conference final for the fifth time in seven seasons.
  • Just watch Sunday and see how much ground Ricardo Clark covers from his central midfield position.
  • Goalkeeper Tally Hall has allowed four goals in six playoff matches. That?s heady stuff, especially considering Hall is just a second-year starter, having apprenticed under Pat Onstad. (Onstad, by the way, is now a D.C. United assistant.)

Bottom line:

Who could blame either team for not finding their best level in this one? Given the physical demands on both teams in matches that stretched their limits in intensity and stamina, there?s every reason to expect cautious approaches and probably some sluggish legs Sunday.

Temperatures in the 80s with typical Houston mugginess won?t help, and it could be a particular hindrance to United, a side coming from a match where kickoff weather was about 40 degrees cooler.

Dynamo playoff matches don?t tend to deliver many goals, so this one has 1-0 written all over it. Considering history and the additional day of rest, this one certainly leans toward the Dynamo.

Bonus: the way EA Sports sees it playing out

Mixing vacation and business travel | Taxes for Writers

November 8th, 2012 ? 6:06 pm @ Carol // No Comments

Hi, Carol,

I have a couple of questions, for which I will gladly pay a suitable consulting feel

I?m going to England to do research for a novel. The book is set in London and I will be visiting actual places that are in the book. But the trip is also a vacation. Is there any rule of thumb as to what percentage can be deducted?

If I pay for dinner with my British publisher, that?s obviously deductible. But what about air fare?

I wouldn?t be there without it. (This is only $300 for me because frequent flyer miles paid for part of it. I presume I wouldn?t deduct my wife?s ticket.)

I?m skittish about deducting more than I?m entitled to. Any advice?

Thanks!

Dan,

Try to separate the personal expenses (your wife?s airfare) from business related expenses. Sometimes it?s difficult. Yes, 100% of your airfare can be a business tax deduction. There is no rule of thumb percentage.

You might want to deduct the meals based on a per diem rate instead of actual expenses.

Self employed people can take a per diem expense for meals and incidentals (water, a drink, snack, etc) when they travel away from their ?tax home? (i.e. out of town requiring an overnight stay). Or you can deduct actual meal expenses.

The per diem can vary by city, but it is a minimum of $46/day for meals and incidentals in the US.? $46 a day is a lot? to eat (!), but that?s what you can deduct and not mess with receipts!

The meal per diem for various cities can be found in IRS Publication 1542. Some cities go as high as $71/day. On the day you leave and return home, you can deduct 75% of the per diem rate.

Keep a log of the date, place, and purpose of each expense.

Watch my YouTube video where the IRS denied the travel expenses of an author: http://youtu.be/Nvdbt7IJqL4

Enjoy the trip!

Brent edges above $107 after slump; US fiscal woes weigh

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent crude rose above $107 per barrel in Asia on Thursday as an almost 4 percent slump in the previous session, its biggest fall in about a year, lured in some buyers although worries on the U.S. fiscal cliff and Europe's woes kept a lid on gains.

Oil led a slump in commodities on Wednesday as concerns shifted to a shaky global economy and its impact on demand, after the uncertainty about the U.S. presidential race faded with Barack Obama's re-election.

"What we're seeing is some short-covering, but I don't expect oil to rebound completely," said Ken Hasegawa, a commodity sales manager at Newedge Japan in Tokyo.

"With all these uncertainties in Europe and the U.S., I don't think oil demand will increase."

Front-month Brent futures traded 52 cents higher at $107.34 per barrel at 0335 GMT. Brent's near 4-percent slump on Wednesday was its steepest since December 2011.

U.S. crude rose 42 cents to $84.86 a barrel, after losing nearly 5 percent in the previous session, also its biggest slump since December 2011.

Investors were also monitoring the impact of a second winter storm that hit the U.S. Northeast on the heels of devastation by Hurricane Sandy as well as data showing higher U.S. inventories of crude and products last week.

"FISCAL CLIFF" AND EUROPE

After weeks of range bound trading ahead of the U.S. presidential elections, the market began to focus on economic uncertainties post election.

Topping the list is negotiations on "fiscal cliff," a $600 billion package of spending cuts and tax increases that may trim the deficit but push the fragile U.S. economy into deep recession.

Weakness in the U.S. economy at a time when China is struggling to push up its growth rate and Europe is grappling with its debt crisis may derail the global economic recovery even further.

Europe's crisis swung back into focus after European Central Bank Chairman Mario Draghi said the euro zone economy will remain weak in the near term, even as he hinted at unlimited intervention in the region's sovereign markets.

Investors will also be monitoring the one-in-a-decade leadership change in China, the world's No. 2 energy consumer, as President Hu Jintao hands over charge to his successor Xi Jinping, although there are no real concerns about changes in policy.

MIDDLE EAST

But supply concerns with increasing violence in the Middle East are expected to keep prices supported.

Syrian rebels fired mortars at President Bashar al-Assad's palace in Damascus on Wednesday but missed, in an attack underlining the growing boldness of forces fighting to end his family's 42 years in power.

In Yemen, a gunman shot dead a Yemeni security officer near the interior ministry in the centre of the capital Sanaa on Wednesday, a police source said, blaming al Qaeda.

The U.S. and Yemen's neighbour Saudi Arabia are keen to stop al Qaeda and other Islamist militants strengthening their hold on a country which is close to major shipping lanes.

Reining in gains, data showed that U.S. crude and product stocks rose last week in spite of inventory drops on the East Coast, where Hurricane Sandy interrupted imports, refining activity and fuel supply chains.

Domestic crude stocks rose 1.77 million barrels in the week to November 2, government figures showed, in line with analyst forecasts in a Reuters poll for a rise of 1.8 million barrels.

?Script to Screen? Series Set to Bring Hollywood Screenwriters to ...

cC26Y7Hnlvwz1E-KNgdzIrlP_B_IQ6ZWpM8RJYmglFyWxxOsQmNpvlh_eJqsTtIIhqLsbu-j6o4

Christy Van Beek

Renowned Hollywood screenwriters will make appearances at University of California Santa Barbara this November as part of the Carsey-Wolf Center and Pollock Theater?s ?Script to Screen? event series. Tom Schulman, the Oscar-winning writer of ?Dead Poets Society,? and Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah, who wrote ?10 Things I Hate About You,? will be headlining the events on Nov. 8 and Nov. 29, respectively. Both events will take place at Pollock Theater at 7 p.m.

The Carsey-Wolf Center and the department of Film and Media Studies present several events focusing on screenwriting each year as part of the ?Script to Screen? series. Introduced in 2011 by Matt Ryan and Joe Palladino, these events concentrate on the translation of screenplays to films, and offer students a chance to learn about how the scripts of many popular movies were successfully adapted by actors, directors and writers.

According to Ryan, the series works toward creating an event that students ?won?t get anywhere else? through exploring the inner workings of a screenplay alongside its creators. Because Pollock Theater accommodates an audience of only 300, students? questions are fielded directly and more personally than larger events.

The pair of events will include a screening of the films as well as a question and answer forum with the screenwriters, where students will have the opportunity to discuss how the decisions of the film?s creators and contributors affected the finished products. A costume contest and chance to win prizes will conclude the events. Past ?Script to Screen? events have included a screening of ?Back to the Future? and a Q&A with Christopher Lloyd, who played Dr. Emmett Brown in the film; another event featured an evening with the animator Don Hertzfeldt, a UCSB alumnus and producer of the Academy Award-nominated film ?Rejected.?

Ryan said that the last few events have featured scene readings taken from parts of the scripts, a portion of the events that the actors and writers especially enjoy and that students find notably interesting because it ?gives them a different view of how the screenwriter wrote the script.? For students interested in screenwriting who don?t know where to begin or how to write an engaging script, learning how familiar scripts were written ?makes the process seem less difficult,? and encourages them to keep writing.

The Carsey-Wolf Center holds many other events throughout the year, working in collaboration with several media initiatives to expand students? understanding and knowledge of various forms of media literacy. As one of many job opportunities for students available through the center, the Pollock Theater offers a unique internship for students interested in the production and direction of theater events. In addition to attending workshops, Pollock interns are given first-hand experience working on media events like the ?Script to Screen? series. Students interested in screenwriting or film studies benefit not only from the advice and perspective of writers who have translated their storytelling vision to Hollywood, but also from the opportunity to become a part of the expanding department of media studies. The interns produce and direct six ?Script to Screen? events each year, two per quarter, and work hard to find engaging films that will appeal to a wide audience. In the words of Ryan, ?the goal is to choose films that both students and the community will connect to,? but the interests of the students take center stage.

Considering that there is a limited number of opportunities to speak one-on-one with well-known screenwriters of popular and beloved films, it is arguable that the ?Script to Screen? events do nothing short of placing student interests at the forefront and in the limelight.
