Apparently, Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, but someone named John Harrison. Now, that sounds like a name that will strike fear even in most battle-harden Klingon.
In a caption of the photo above by Trek Movie (via Bleedingcool.com), Cumberbatch's character (center) is listed as John Harrison. Presumably, that caption came from Paramount itself.
The question is, who is Harrison and why does he want to take revenge on Star Fleet?
According to his entry on Startrek.com, Harrison appeared in the Original Series in the episode Space Seed. He's a technician on the U.S.S. Enterprise and nearly suffocated on the bridge when Khan shut off the air supply there.
Well, there goes that theory he's Khan, but the connection is there nonetheless.
Now as to why he's seeking revenge -- maybe something happened to his family during or after the ship's encounter with Khan that caused him to hate Kirk/Star Fleet.
Bleedingcool also found out who Alice Eve is playing as well. She is playing Carol Marcus, the same Marcus who was discovered to have a son named David with Kirk in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
There's that Khan connection again...
